After the war, Hermione paced in front of the wall that hid the Room of Requirement. “Please. I need to see him one more time. I have to see him. Please.” She chanted as she walked back and forth. When the wall didn’t open, she slid to the floor, put her head into her hands, and began to cry. Hearing a noise, Hermione looked up and swallowed her tears. To her surprise, she saw the door begin to appear. When it was fully formed, Hermione stood up and pushed open the door with a shaking hand. The room was very different from whenever she had previously been inside. This time, it was completely empty with the exception of a tall, free-standing floor mirror. On its frame, it read: Erised stra ehru oyt ube cafru oyt on wohsi “I show not your face but your heart’s desire.” Hermione said softly to herself. “But what does that mean?” She asked out loud, gazing into the mirror. Hermione gasped as the reflection changed, slowly, a tall red head appeared over her shoulder. “Fred?” She asked, as tears started to flow done her cheeks, to which his reflection nodded. “I love you Fred. I’ll miss you.” She said, not daring to stray her eyes from his, reflection or not, she was going to miss those eyes. “I love you to ‘Mione.” A voice said from behind her, causing her to jump. Hermione spun around, shocked to see the ghostly figure of Fred Weasley standing before her. “No use talking to a mirror that could make you go loopy, when you can just talk to a ghost that’ll talk back.” He said, cracking that crooked smile that she loved so much. “You’re a ghost?” She looked at him in bewilderment. “Yea. I figured I might as well stick around to torment the professors with Peeves, everyone could use the laugh anyway.” “That’s the joker I fell in love with.” Hermione said with a smile that didn’t reach her eyes. “’Mione…I’ll always love you, but you got to promise that you’ll move on.” “How?” “Find some tosser that’ll sweep you off your feet, make you smile, and look at you like you’re the only girl in the world. I’ll always be here for you – just not in a romantic way. While I’m still devilishly handsome, I am – albeit, unfortunately – dead.” “Jokes at a time like this, really Fred?” “Hey – I died smiling surrounded by the people I love. It’s alright Hermione, you’ll be fine. You know, I always saw the way that Malfoy bloke looked at you.” “What!?” She screeched. “Peeves was right! It certainly is pleasing to give someone a scare.” Fred’s ghostly figure smiled, as he motioned Hermione out of the room. “Now come one, help me make my mom piss herself!” Hermione smiled, knowing that even if Fred had died in a brutal war, he’d be there for her whenever she needed. “Maybe I’ll take come back for a seventh year and you can give me dating advice.” Hermione smiled wickedly, giving light to the seemingly dark situation. “My bets still on that prick Draco.” “Fred Weasley – I swear.” The pair walked out of the room, leaving the mirror behind. Hermione had got what she needed - to see the man she loved again, even if she couldn’t keep him. ~ Astoria
