After thinking about it for a while this afternoon it amazes me how some people arent willing to be considerate of a child with special needs. That they cant make an exception to the rules, rules that are hard for them to understand. My child is autistic and I have always taught her that she can do anything any other kid can do and be whatever she wants to be. She might do it differently and at her own pace but as a mother it breaks my heart to see her get upset because she doesnt understand why she cant do something that she really wants to do and is so excited about unless she take out her earrings...yes, earrings. They are a part of her and she is ok with covering them up but they do not come out. If she was told that she couldnt participate unless she took them out then she would rather not participate and that is NOT ok with me. I have run into this problem a couple of times now with different sports and I cant for the life of me get people to understand that there are some issues that you do not push with autistic children. The smallest things can unravel any progress they make whether it be earrings, shoes, certain clothes, a certain color, things that most of us wouldnt even think about. Things that dont seem like a big deal to us can be such a set back to them. To some they may just be earring but to her they make her who she is and I couldnt be prouder that she is not willing to change who she is for anyone!!!!
