After transforming lives of many, winners’ lives to be transformed THOUSANDS of cupcakes and hours of dedication to assist the homeless has earned a UCT student a meeting with Queen Elizabeth. Patrice Madurai, founder of the Cupcake ReSolution, is one of three young South Africans and 60 from across the Commonwealth who have been awarded the Queen’s Young Leaders Award. This forms part of The Queen’s Young Leaders Programme and celebrates the achievements of young people who are taking the lead to transform the lives of others and make a lasting difference in their communities. Winners will receive mentoring and online learning provided by Cambridge University, and attend a week-long residential programme in the UK in June, where they will receive their award at Buckingham Palace from the queen. Madurai, a business science and economics student, said many South African children did not have birth certificates and so couldn’t access grants. Without ID they couldn’t write their matric exams. “They get trapped in a cycle of poverty.” The project is running in Durban, Port Elizabeth and Cape Town and will be launched in Joburg later this year She said it reached out to the poor and homeless, with a focus on children.
