After two days of exciting competition, the 2014 Junior Victorian Lifesaving Championships have wrapped up today with Mentone Lifesaving Club finishing victorious overall with a final score of 391. Half Moon Bay SLSC finished second with 319 points followed by Jan Juc SLSC finishing in third place on 293. Life Saving Victoria’s Aquatic Sports Coordinator Tom Mitchell, said the second day of competition was a great success. “Day Two of the Champs is all about teamwork. The team events bring out great camaraderie between team members, as well as friendly rivalry and competition between clubs,” he said. The day began at 8am with the traditional March Past followed by the Official Junior Lifesaving Award Ceremony shortly after. “The March Past was a major highlight today, as it is at every junior carnival, where teams march in their club colours with a traditional reel and line,” said Mr Mitchell. “This tradition dates back to our earliest lifesaving carnivals and is always a great spectacle.” Mr Mitchell said there were some exciting finishes across the competition including Half Moon Bay Team A winning the U13 Boy’s Surf Team Race. Point Leo SLSC Team A won the U13 Girls Surf Board Relay and U13 Girls Aqua Cameron Relay, while Mentone LSC Team A won the U14 Girls Surf Team Race. In the traditional Belt and Reel event Mentone LSC Team A won the U12 Girls event and Mount Martha LSC Team A won it for the boys.
