After two weeks, today marks my last day in Breda. It is difficult closing the door on a now (almost) empty room. The paintings are off the walls, the photo frames boxed up. Those, and all the other things that identified my moms last home have been moved. Most were given away to one charity or another, some sold and the proceeds donated to an organisation that trains guide dogs. The big antique chest remains and unfortunately Ive not succeeded in finding a good home for it - no doubt Mam would scold me for being wasteful. It will be difficult, too - indeed very difficult - driving away from Breda this time, for this has now been the last time we enjoyed the company of a remarkable and irreplaceable lady. Here are the homes on the Jan Nieuwenhuizenstraat, the Cavaleriestraat an d de Werve, not to mention the occasionally-mentioned water tower. These places were occupied by honourable people who, in circumstances none of my generation can ever fully understand, lived their lives in heroic and exemplary fashion. The lessons they taught are treasured and will never be forgotten. Thanks to these wonderful ancestors, the time we shared and the legacy they leave behind, Breda will always hold a special place in my heart. Till we meet agin.
