After watching 12 Years a Slave I realized many people in the United States are still not ready for a conversation about race. This work, just like its predecessors (i.e. - Roots, Huckleberry Finn, Amistad, Uncle Toms Cabin) is head of its time. Until some film or popular book delves deep into the history and creation of race, it will be hard for many people to comprehend how these events currently affect us today as far as race goes. Many people must also clear their minds that people create these films to make whites feel guilty for the horrors of slavery. One day, these time capsules will have their place in the world. Outside of using a racial lens their are still many messages to take away from this film. 12 Years a Slave continues to show a theme present in history throughout the world: people will commit horrible and unspeakable acts to other humans if it means obtaining a mass amount of money. It is our responsibility as people to stop this downward spiral.
