After worker left yesterday, I had about twenty minutes to get - TopicsExpress

After worker left yesterday, I had about twenty minutes to get ready to go to Cornhill, & I caught a bit of the Jeremy Vine Show on Radio 2. He was talking to this guy that ran a café called Skitchens in Bristol, that uses surplus food, mainly from supermarket skips. A similar place is being run in Leeds. Jeremy asked what theyd do if they put locks on the skips, & Im thinking they DO put locks on them!! So various people phoned in. One said there was an electric fence round the skip area in one Tesco (somewhere in England)! Another mentioned the practice of putting bleach into the food to render it inedible! One guy that had worked in supermarkets for decades, said that its not just slightly out of date stuff in there, & that food could be thrown out for various reasons. One caller said that they had the huge crate on wheels, full of food they were chucking out, at the front of the supermarket, instead of the back, as was usual, & their kids were asking loads of questions when they could see all the bread & other perfectly good food, & they said they tried to explain at least four times, but no matter how hard they tried, the kids just couldnt understand why all that food would be just thrown away! What about health & safety? Once the environment health get in there, no doubt theyll try & shut these places down which is such a shame. Customers are asked to just give a donation, & if they cant afford anything, they can pay in kind by sourcing more produce or doing something for the place. And this place is going from strength to strength, in the eight or nine months its been open. The amount of food wasted every year is truly astronomical - its shocking! I really hope theyre not shut down, & we see more places like this!
