After years of moving piles of wood chips, sticks, leaves, etc. - TopicsExpress

After years of moving piles of wood chips, sticks, leaves, etc. that had built up in my yard it finally dawned on me that even in hot dry weather it is usually damp, if not wet, under those piles. Aha! The spongy wood and leaves must retain moisture! Now that my thick skull has finally been penetrated, Im putting those moisture-holding sticks, chips and leaves in planting beds, where Ill cover them with soil and add plants or seeds. The theory is that the yard trash will help store water for use by the things planted above it--even as the trash decomposes and adds substance to the soil. Yeah, sometimes it takes me a while.......
