After years of performing with the orchestras of El Sistema a a guest soloist, I was able to get to know many of them, from the staff to the musicians. Many of them were my dear friends. Sadly, that is no longer the case, since I implored them to analyze the emissary role they play as members of an organization sustained and adopted by the current Venezuelan regime. Some have confided in me, in tears and desperation, that all is not as it seems. The original ethos of the Sistema was a beautiful one. Thirty nine years ago. But today it carries the international torch for the government that funds it. Its flag-adorned image is ubiquitous globally, from magazine to record cover, a harmful distraction and gross misrepresentation of the real Venezuela, to which every member is exposed in one way or another outside of the concert hall bubble.
