“After you have inquired into the principle of wu and ji, you must establish the directions of geng and jia. Geng is the West, Metal, the emotions (qing), and the Tiger. Jia is the East, Wood, the Nature (xing), and the Dragon. This concerns the emotions of the human being, which like to run at a fast pace: as soon as they see something, they chase it and become like a tiger that goes wild. Every time this happens, one’s Nature is damaged. When one’s Nature is deluded by the emotions, it cannot be the ruler, and becomes like a dragon that soars into the air. Thus the two become separated from one another. For one who practices the great cultivation, it is not difficult to have control on this. As soon as it happens, you set to practice.. . .Within the time of one breath you will be able to reuninte Metal and Wood. Nature and emotions will join as one. . . The Heart will be empty and clear.” - Wang Jie, Commentary on the Mirror for Compounding the Medicine: A Fourteenth-Century Work on Taoist Internal Alchemy
