Aftermath of jimmy Ellis funeral. Me to Sam McCready Good man Sam just home from Jimmys funeral and funeral meats remarkably joyous uplifting occasion beautifully produced yes,, and by his (extremely) talented family in collaboration with Church of Ireland. Talented daughter in law and two ;lassies string trio Back double violin concerto, harp-my lagan love, church choir and fine organ playing ditto uileann pipes, tributes short ant to point which how talented multitfaceted bloody talented yes he was all that but this funeral revealed and showcased a hidden but immensely talented family who loved and cared for Jimmy Ellis backstage. I knew Jimmy well, as you know but i was unaware of all this it was an eye opener I can tell you. Trnout as expected Graham Reed, Adrian Dunbar, Ian McIlhinney to the fore but of many and celebrity others, George Shane and May made it from way up Strabane way and of course Roma Tomelty whose Dad Joe, you know of course, was so involved in the Over The Bridge. Familiar faces from the old Arts and Lyric as youd expect but te big surprise was his love and knowledge of French and Spanish poets many of whose poems he .oh and I predicted wrong this morning. The rain paid deference and held off.tho It threatened much but did not deliver. A bit of sun brightened the March cold during the final simple graveside ceremony and committal to the lamenting strain of a lone piper in a wee cemetery high on the Holywood Hills overlooking Jimmys beloved East Belfast; the shipyard sites and the Lagan, the water rolling under the Bridge that inspired that ground breaking play Jimmy awa n gone now but his talent and spirit willl be in Belfast for a long time yet.
