Afternoon, everyone! With the official release of Fate Reforged tomorrow the Ogres and I checked out some of the upcoming cards, and man are we excited! As we searched through we found a few gems that might get overlooked in all the hustle and bustle, so be sure to give these diamonds in the rough a look, and maybe give them a try in tomorrows Friday Night Magic at 7:00 PM. Our first diamond is Monastery Siege, a three mana blue enchantment with some interesting flavor to it. When it enters the battlefield, players may choose one of two effects! Players may either draw an additional card then discard a card which leads to some crazy burn and combos, OR any spells that target you or your permanents cost two more mana to cast which helps protect you from those burn spells and combos! A super interesting card for both control and aggressive players (Might have some great modern play). Next up is Soulfire Grand Master, a two mana white creature that has an ability which will redefine formats. As a 2/2 creature with lifelink for two mana, the Grand Master already gives you value. However, its power keeps growing as it gives all your instant and sorcery spells lifelink, meaning any spell that deals damage gains you that much life as well. Players may also pay four mana to return a spell theyve just cast to their hand, leading to some crazy spell recycling later in the game! I personally cant wait to see what this card does to formats like Commander and Modern! Our last gem is Soulflayer, which is a six mana black creature with delve. As a base 4/4, the Soulflayer seems a little underwhelming at first, with only delve to make up its lack of power. However, its real power comes with its delve abilities. Whenever you delve a creature to pay for Soulflayer, it takes on the abilities of whatever was delved. Literally, any good key word text like first strike, lifelink or hexproof can be given to Soulflayer, leading to some crazy fun. I personally cant wait to see what players do with this card and Chromanticore.
