Again, an article written for physicians advocating for tumor - TopicsExpress

Again, an article written for physicians advocating for tumor testing of colon cancer tumors, w/o providing information or education on the other method of taking family histories and preventative genetic testing to protect families and save lives. Nobody wants to wait for a younger person or any other member of a family to have to contract cancer, to obtain a diagnosis of #Lynchsyndrome to prevent cancer. It doesnt make sense. Too many institutions, including large institutions involved in managed care solely concentrate on tumor testing & not taking family histories. Do the math...less than 7000 persons w/ LS contract cancer each yr. Less than 50% follow thru w/ genetic testing as a result of tumor testing. Tumor testing results in less than 3,000 diagnoses per year, particularly not detecting LS in women. Over 725,000 in the U.S., alone, have yet to be diagnosed, yet this method only diagnoses 12,000 or less than 1.7% annually. NO member of any family should be sacrificed so other family members can live when there is an alternative way to PREVENT cancer. Write the publisher. Ask for a balanced article. At this rate, it will take well over 50 years to diagnose families. Seriously, dont our families deserve better? medscape/viewarticle/821981
