Again.. not talking down the bible.. its good.. we do need it (not nearly as much as we need Holy Spirit, but we do need it as a teaching tool and to point us to Jesus).. Anyway, we think we need to label the bible with things like inerrant, word of God, final authority, etc. because there are too many people that justify their spiritual experiences, teachings or behaviors by saying the Spirit told me. I get it. There are people who do that and its true that they might not all be hearing from the Spirit of God. They might be teaching doctrines of demons in the name of God. But how many people in the world and in history have used the *bible* as a justification of their actions? Instead of saying, The Spirit told me, they say, the bible says... and then stone, kill, judge, condemn, etc. Also, if were to be like Jesus, were going to have to become The Spirit told me type people. Because Jesus was exactly that type of person. He knew scripture inside and out, yes. He quoted it, yes. These are great things and I encourage them. Lets remember that he also corrected scripture (Youve heard it said but I tell you ). And he spent everyday hearing the voice of the Spirit, saying and doing EXACTLY what the Spirit of his Father was saying and doing. He did nothing apart from that voice. Thats called intimacy, folks. And I want it. I dont just want a relationship with the bible. I want a relationship with the Living Word, constantly speaking. The bible didnt tell Jesus to go fast in the wilderness for 40 days. The Spirit did. The bible didnt tell Jesus which disciples to choose. The Spirit did. The bible didnt tell Jesus who He was. The Spirit did. And on it goes. I dont want to throw the baby out with the bathwater. I just want to throw out the dirty bathwater. I hold the bible close to my chest, honor it for what it is and what it truly claims to be. I want to throw out the traditions labeling it as something it doesnt claim to be and elevating it above the Spirit who wrote it. Then, we can profit much more from the bible as it was intended to be studied.
