Again tonight, with exception to the incumbent, I was the only candidate for James Monroe in attendance. It would be nice to know that the potential James Monroe District Supervisor was up to speed on the issues affecting the County! Tonight´s Wireless Authority BoD meeting was frankly frustrating and absurd! Over the past year, I have witnessed multiple citizens give public comment on the lack of service and support, outlining proposals, presenting research and POCś for probable solutions. The responses from the Board included ¨I feel your pain¨, and ¨we have tried that before and it didn´t work.¨ Finally, a comment/presentation made a few weeks ago by a citizen regarding Verizon prompted some discussion and after much banter....Ms. Brabo said she would get a firm POC and arrange for Verizon to meet with the BoD. Well, TONIGHT...she presented that she had engaged Verizon, and that they were willing to have a meeting with the BoD, but not in a public forum. This makes sense for the business to protect its plans, products etc. This confused the other members of the Board who became adamant that they didn´t want to engage Verizon if it was not in a public forum. Mr. Brooks, Mr. Grzeika and Mr. Sisson were ¨leary¨ of meeting. In fact the Chairman called it a ¨slippery slope.” They were never interested to begin with! I am done with the LIP SERVICE and felt compelled to address the BoS during their public comment! I stated that the County engaged Verizon. Verizon didn’t come knocking on the County’s door. I pointed out that this was in response to citizen outcry that they are tired of hearing ¨I feel your pain¨, and ¨we have tried that before and it didn´t work.¨ I told the Board that they ought to at least explore options. It may or may not work but it then again it might be the right fit! At least the BoD would be able to say they followed up and met with Verizon instead of the same old excuses! Finally, I re-emphasized the need for citizen membership on the BoD who may show a little more willingness to explore possibilities. The BoD have no higher accountability in that the BoD is in actuality the BoS who have the final say! Does anyone else see something wrong with the BoS being the governing body of the Wireless and Public Service Authorities???? Seriously!
