Agar firdaus bar roo-e zameen ast, Hameen ast-o hameen ast-o hameen ast If there is a paradise on earth,It is this, it is this, it is this.... This farsi couplet by Amir Khusro best describes Kashmir. Where, nature has bestowed immense scenic beauty...... Where, sunbeams pierce through cottony clouds in the skies , lifting the veil of fog from the lush green valley..... Where, a concoction of colors and forms reveals itself…in the form & colour of the red maple leaves falling gently to rest peacefully on the ground as autumn approaches ......the soothing aquamarine water or the dazzling red of apples and cherries, the invigorating spring green of the fields or the splash of colours in the baghs, the alluring hazel eyes of the locals and the rust coloured earth........ Where the clusters of Walnut trees around placid lakes reflect in the calm waters … As do the carved wooden balconies of the shikaras and the misty peaks of the Pir Panjal moutains.... And it is this quiet beauty that have inspired the crafts of Kashmir till date. The sarees & shawls beautifully hand - embroidered, commonly use the Pamposh (lotus), Sosan (Iris), Dachh (vine), Sumbal and Yambarzal (hyacinth and narcissus), Dainposh (pomegranate) motifs. Jamwar’ is a pattern, which covers the entire shawl. ‘Jalidar’ designs are Arabesques or net-like designs. The saree in the photo is a crepe silk and fully hand- embroidered . It took a year to make and the embroidery went through many skilled hands before it was completed .
