Age 5 My life is not your life, you live forever and if I lived forever I would not be ‘me’ but something else. You have not always been as you are now, so it is the essence within you that testifies to your antiquity. You were molten rock once, then a mountain, a hill until the planet shuddered as it sometimes does and you were changed again. The heat of the sun beat against you, the rain and chill of the air fractured you and you became many. Today you are a pebble tumbling in my river, the fast flowing water shaping you as you turn and turn and turn. You look good for your age, beautiful even with your variegated colours glinting in the water. You are peaceful but it wasn’t always so for you and in the passing of your years such things you have witnessed, such wonders and natural change that our fleeting lives will never see.
