Age gap and/or traditional military pilot vs contemporary flight student strikes hard. Today I had my first two primary on wings assigned. For those that dont know what that is, its a young naval or marine flight student who is just starting their journey. U are to mentor and influence their training and direction. I had one navy ensign and one marine lieutenant. I was fired up assuming theyd have the same passion I had in their shoes to fly single seat jets capable of firing all sorts of firepower at the bad guys to save american women and children as my generation of boys were raised. I asked them both what they wanted to fly and they replied P-8s (for the navy kid) and C-130s (the marine). I wanted to self mutilate my leg at the answers. Instead, I looked at them and told them you two need to decide right now if u wanna be Alpha Betas or Tri Lambs. Blank stares were their reply. I immediately assigned them homework over the weekend to watch the 1984 classic movie Revenge of the Nerds to grasp my meaning. It worked for the fellas I flew jets with... Just sayin
