Age has been used as a major criteria to determine whether a patient with leukemia or another serious illness is a suitable candidate for hematopoietic cell transplantation (HCT) from a bone marrow donor. A new index is proposed that takes into consideration comorbid conditions (other diseases) as well as age. For example, younger patients with pretransplant comorbidities are predicted to have poorer survival after transplant than otherwise healthy patients over age 60.
