Age of Context 1st Annual Report Age of Context has closed its first year of sales as of today. Our grand total is 31,869. To our way of thinking, this is a phenomenal number. As a self publisher, I made more money from Age of Context, than the previous four books combined. As far as we can make out, AofC did better than any self-published business book, except for APE: Author, Publisher and Entrepreneur, by Guy Kawasaki and Shawn Welch, a book that guided us in our own strategy. Through agreement with our publisher, we cannot discuss how many Naked Conversations we sold in public, and we do not know how many were sold just in the first year, but we are reasonable certain that Context beat Naked [so to speak] by a wide margin. For those of you who like numbers, or are interested in self-publishing, heres the breakout. Amazon Sales: These are paper, ebook and audio versions sold directly between Amazon and readers. Paper: 3200 Kindle: 8392 Audible: 5467 Total: 16,935 This number is after returns to Amazon It does not include about 1200 Kindle Library downloads, where we receive royalties, but no actual sale takes place. The interesting part for us--and by far the most lucrative came from speaking engagements. In most cases, when Robert and I spoke, we sold book to the producers for attendees. We would then usually sign the books for attendees. Total sales at speaking engagements was 9072. Then there was miscellaneous: Tis includes, custom books for someone who had us replace Mark Benioffs Foreword, with a Foreword from the purchasers CEO. The book was in hardcover. We sold 125 of them. We also sold directly to a few overseas bookstores and some site licenses. We sold 425 books at our launch party and a couple of thousand through site license agreements. Total number of misc: 5862. In numbers that came in yesterday, we saw spikes in the American versions of the book in Korea and Japan last month. This is shortly after the localized versions were released. In Korea we sold 2500 copies in the first two weeks and it appears we are doing well in Korea. We cannot accurately count some of these units and they will be reflected in next years sales--but my guess is we came pretty close to 34,000. For fellow authors, I hope this will help. There are many advantages to selling books when you speak in lieu of speaking fees. It makes producers and attendees happier, and authors wealthier.
