Agriculture accounts for about 54.6 per cent of total employment (Census 2011), there has been a decline in the absolute number of cultivators, which is unprecedented, from 127.3 million (Census 2001) to 118.7 million (Census 2011). This is indicative of a shift from farm to non-farm employment, causing real farm wages to rise by over 7 per cent annually in recent years. I am quite sure that over 50 per cent of the 8.6 million cultivators (mostly small holders, who abandoned agriculture) must be languishing in the urban slums.
