Ah, Miriam, Miriam: Quo Vadis? In December 2011, Miriam - TopicsExpress

Ah, Miriam, Miriam: Quo Vadis? In December 2011, Miriam Defensor-Santiago was elected to the International Criminal Court -- the first Filipino and first Asian from a developing country to be elected ICC judge. It was a position that the Philippines campaigned hard for. Definitely a big honor not only for her but for the country. Curiously, Santiago deferred taking her oath and chose not to assume the post in 2012, then citing her high blood pressure and condition known as lazy bone marrow. In 2013, She hinted that she might no longer join the ICC because of her chronic fatigue syndrome illness, which has also prevented her from regularly attending Senate session. Furthermore, she held on to her position as Philippine senator, turning down calls to open an extra seat in the 2013 midterm election. Finally, on June 3, 2014 Santiago wrote President Sang-Hyun Song of the ICC (copy furnished to President Aquino III, Foreign Secretary del Rosario, Senate and President Drilon) informing him of her decision to step down as elected judge due to her illness, known as chronic fatigue syndrome. Apparently Miriam has never believed the saying that you cant have your cake and eat it too. And it beats me how she can possibly step down from a position that she never assumed. If you will also recall, Santiago announced, in a press briefing no less, that she has lung cancer in its 4th stage. Truly a deadly sickness with next to zero survival rate. And she said: Im not afraid of cancer. There is nothing Im afraid of! Wow. Hubris to the max. I suspect that Miriam Defensor Santiago is really angling for the presidency; that her illnesses are more contrived than real -- designed to elicit sympathy. How else could she be suffering from high blood pressure, lazy bone marrow, chronic fatigue syndrome and stage 4 lung cancer -- yet weigh in vigorously on every national and international issue, including savaging the number one contender for the presidency? Superwoman, Wonder Woman and even Darna herself could not have done better. If the late Mariano Contreras, aka Pugo were alive today, he would describe such clearly political antics with his favorite quip: Das a lot o nonsense. It was selfish of her not to assume the ICC position which Philippine authorities lobbied and worked hard for, wasting three years before informing the ICC to forget it. The honor could have gone to someone else more worthy. The kindest one can do for her is to pray for her, even if one suspects that its really a case of lazy bones deep down to her very marrow, compounded by chronic fatigue brought about by scratching everybody elses galis (but not her own), and perhaps the cancer is not pulmonary but cephalic in nature.
