Ah, the after-action report. We have another Atlas Academy History Fair behind us. It has been a day of great triumph for some and bitter disappointment for others. Some kids were just glad that it was over. Whew! As with any contest (except in the Big 12) there are winners and losers. Gamblers sometimes refer to this as being in the money or out of the money. In history fair we have those that advance to the next level of competition and those that dont. And here is the hard part. Every year, I relive my own childhood disappointments and victories as I watch my students wait for their results. Some of those memories are as vivid today as they were way back when. And, as I end my day, I sit here with a sea of bright expectant faces swirling around in my head and I so wish could take them all to Baylor to the regional fair. But that is not the way it works. It never has been and it never will be. There is a reason that winning feels so good. And I think it is because the pain of not winning is so bad. I just hope that my students hear me when I tell them that I cried their tears years ago. And there are some that I will shed a tear for tonight. Tomorrow we will begin again.
