Ah the dump that was Verden - after receiving my notification of posting there was drowning my sorrows in the NAAFI at Gaza when an upgrader corporal - Alex Bissett whom id got to know there asked what was up - he commiserated and bought me a beer, following week he was in the same bar getting pissed - I asked him what was up - posted to 1 Div, I commiserated, bought him a beer and we got shiters together. Ono arriving at Verden passed through the gates and was advised to pvr by the guardroom staff or go awol whilst i still had the chance, stupidly didnt and went into the Bravo Troop office to be met by by Ssgt Bob Bates, filled in all the paperwork and was invited to speak to the OC - Capt Thompson - we had a very pleasant chat for a while and he says I see you comfe from Fareham - what school did you attend = Bishopfield I said - did you get O level maths - oh yes sir - who taught you - and old duffer called Thompson - he took umbrage at this saing that ws his father - and from there the posting went down hill. Names i remember - Cpl John Toas, Sgt Colin Richardson, Sgt Andy Evans Ssgt Bob Mawson (replaced Batesy), Ca[pt Mountford (or similar) replace Thompson, Cpl Dinger Bell (storement - ace cricketer from the West Indies) LCpl Robbie Piggy Parker, Cpl Taff Jones, Sig Taff Lane and many others.
