Ah.... this is the US way of retaliating, after the country was accused of ill-treating a female Indian diplomat to the US who was detained for abusing her Indian maid? Malaysia also had this experience many years ago. When the city of Surat in India (further north from Mumbai, and 1201 km away from Chennai) had a plague epidemic in 1994, a number of Middle East countries cancelled flights between India and major cities in the Gulf. Malaysia followed suit - by cancelling flights between Chennai (the only city it served in India then) and Kuala Lumpur. But Singapore Airlines continued its services between Chennai and Singapore! After that episode, it was really tough for Malaysia to get additional landing rights in India for its carriers. So much diplomacy moves after that and then only India relented many years later...and this was before AirAsia started.
