Ahead Of Chairman/Leader Election… SLPP ‘Alagbas’ Warned By Musa Sesay Ordinary supporters and patrons of the main opposition Sierra Leone People’s Party (SLPP) have issued a stern warning to the two antagonistic camps that continue to divide one of the oldest political parties in the country. The warning came after recent ugly face-to-face confrontations between Chief Somana Kapen and Ambassador Alie Bangura factions. What is clear is that bot h contending camps continue to accuse each other of trying to manipulate the elections for ulterior motives. SLPP supporters, however, maintained that they are going to resist any attempt to rig the forthcoming party chairman/leader election. Outgoing SLPP Chairman and Leader, John Oponjo Benjamin, is accused of supporting Mr. Alie Bangura. His intention, according to some SLPP supporters this press spoke to, is also supported by former ministers, including Alpha T. Wurie, Alpha Timbo, Bobson Sesay, Christian Keili, former President Alhaji Ahmad Tejan Kabba and his vice President, Solomon Ekuma Berewa. On the other hand, supporters of the Alie Bangura camp state that those supporting Chief Somana Kapen do not want peace and development in the SLPP. They accuse them of trying to impose Julius Maada Bio as the party’s 2018 presidential flag bearer. “SLPP has unblemished personalities who are waiting in their wings. We must, therefore, create a level playing field for them,” one very passionate youthful pro-Ali Bangura supporter maintained. Meanwhile, big wigs of SLPP and supporters at home and abroad have called on the two rival camps to remain united for the good of the party; as the ongoing tussle will take them and the party nowhere. “We are far from achieving our objectives as a party to be locked in such bitter leadership rivalry at this stage,” one disillusioned female SLPP supporter said.
