Ahead of this Sundays Hillwalk, heres a refresher of the rules. All new walkers welcome ............ Hill Walking with S.T.E.P.S. We are not a hill walking club so we have to insist on some ground rules. Accept leaders decisions at all times Have your own insurance. Neither landowners nor guides will accept any liability. No dogs. Show respect for landowners and other walkers. Over sixteen years of age only. Moderate level of fitness required --- no need to be super fit. Stay with group at all times --- notify guides if a toilet break etc. is required. Getting started Essential Equipment Rucksack or backpack --- preferably with waterproof cover Waterproof boots with good ankle support --- strictly no trainers Waterproof jacket --- preferably with hood Waterproof over trousers General trekking trousers --- no denims Plenty of layers and fleece top Warm hat Food and drinks --- preferably hot and cold Non-essential equipment ( but useful) Gaiters Torch --- preferably head torch Whistle Small first aid kit Walking pole Sun hat/cream/glasses General Notes for “go it alones” Always check weather conditions before heading out. Leave no trace. Take all litter including biodegradable items home. Go in groups of at least three and stay with group at all times. Follow the countryside code and close all gates --- except those meant to be left open. Never jump from walls or fences and do not damage them. Never wear denims --- like a sponge when they get wet. No running --- especially downhill ( 90% of all accidents happen on downward slopes). Stop to admire the view. Never do so while walking. Open mountain is unpredictable.
