Ahhh the adventures of a vet student never end. Came home from an 11 hour day on clinics hoping to get some stuff done around the house. First stop was Scooters cage. I got her a diaper ready and went to take her out and found she was tangled in her blanket. Tried to get her untangled. Wasnt happening. Braved her teeth and claws to get to her left hind leg where she seemed to be hung up...sure enough, she had somehow managed to wrap her blanket around her leg so tightly that the leg was literally being strangled by it. I managed to unwind the blanket from her leg, but could tell there was a ton of swelling and possibly broken bones. Sigh. Off to the ER we went. A couple of radiographs showed that, thank goodness, there were no obvious fractures. However when we clipped the hair from the leg, we could see all the soft tissue damage done by the blanket. We couldnt get a pulse on Doppler from that foot, but it is possible that there is just so much swelling that we cant get a signal. We did get a toenail to bleed when we cut it back past the quick, which is a good sign that there may still be adequate blood flow to the foot. The ER doctor felt comfortable sending her home after prescribing anti-inflammatories to try and get some of the swelling down, as well as passive range of motion exercises to get blood flowing through as well. Tomorrow she will go back to consult with soft tissue surgery to make sure they concur. Please cross your fingers for Scooter that her leg regains normal blood flow! If not she could be looking at amputation :/
