Ahistorical arguments such as the following highlight the need to understand the state through class analysis: As repeatedly proven here, no such thing as state communism since the state is inherently capitalist. Was Augustus a CEO? How about Cesare Borgia or the Doge of Venice? It makes no sense to understand state power in any way other than a relation of repression between classes. This specific argument betrays a lack of knowledge of history: the state has existed in periods where capitalists didnt. Other theories about the state also have their faults and they also reveal the need for Marxist analysis. For instance, the Weberian theory of the state being a monopoly on legitimate violence is not an explanation of what the state is, but a description. Marxists take this description and add an explanation regarding function: this monopoly on legitimate violence is a relation of repression between classes, and the function of the state is to perpetuate class rule.
