Aikido is a art where traditionally you had to have a Black Belt in another art before you could become a student . The founder Ueshiba was a master of Japanese styles. When he went with the Japanese Army to China during the war he was looking to learn KungFu or TaiChi or anything , but wherever he went practice stopped , and nobody would show him anything or even talk to him , he was the enemy. He was able to watch bits and pieces of Tai Chi Chuan , and he developed AiKiDo from that. His footwork was awkward so he chose to hide it under his waist cloth . But he was able to remember the final movement of each set of movements in Tai Chi , and he developed the techniques from that. AiKiDo is Tai Chi Chuan without the form ..... or Chin Na - Chinese wrestling
