Air Defenders! 46 years ago today Army leaders determined a need for a specialized branch within the Army to defend the nation, our joint force, and assets vital to our Combatant Commanders against a variety of air threats. Indeed, June 20th, 1968 was an auspicious day for the branch. In the decades since the formal activation of the Air Defense Artillery, tens of thousands of Soldiers have stood tall across the globe trained and ready to conduct air and missile defense operations. Although we are less than 2% of the active and reserve component, Air Defense Artillery Soldiers and formations are 58% forward deployed in a variety of world hot spots – Turkey, Jordan, Kuwait, Qatar, Bahrain, United Arab Emirates, Germany, Israel, Hawaii, Guam, Japan, South Korea and Afghanistan. We have Soldiers manning stations in Alaska and California, and we have Soldiers ready to defend our nation’s capital in a moment’s notice. Across the Army and joint force, we are in great demand and highly valued. We have a lot to be proud of! Speaking of pride, the senior leaders of the Army and our ADA branch are very proud of what you do every day in support of the Air and Missile Defense mission. We are equally proud of your Families and the sacrifices we ask of them and we thank them! All the best to the Air Defense Artillery, our Soldiers and Families. Respectfully, Colonel Christopher L. Spillman Commandant, Air Defense Artillery School, Chief of the Air Defense Artillery
