Airlines Operators of Nigeria (AON) has rebirthed with the appointment of Kayode Odukoya, the Chief Operating Officer of First Nation Airways as its Chairman. For over 10 years the leadership of the association had been in the hands of what airline owners described as interlopers made up of many who did not own any airline and others who only have Air Operators Certificate (AOC) which they rent out to other operators. But yesterday, the real airline operators pinned the executive down to a meeting which lasted several hours at the Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority Annexe, Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Lagos where the members of the old executive and the operators had a shouting match and later it was resolved that the executive had to be dissolved and Dr Steve Mahonwu, the erstwhile chairman of the association stepped down and Odukoya was appointed. This was confirmed by a senior member of the association who said that, “We have dissolved the AON executive and Captain Mohammed Joji (the secretary general) is out so he cannot make any statement on behalf of AON. However, he is still a member of trustee of the association. The new leader is now Odukoya of the First Nation Airways. Dr Mahonwu confirmed that the association’s executive was dissolved but as the constitution of the body has proviso for board of trustees, the members of the association agreed to set up a three-man committee, including Captain Joji, Dr Mahonwu and Odukoya who was also in charge of the forthcoming election, to oversee the affairs of the association until another executive was elected
