Airlines canceling flights ahead of East Coast storm; Cleveland Hopkins affected CLEVELAND, Ohio — Airlines anticipating problems from a major winter storm moving up the East Coast have canceled thousands of flights nationwide, including some flights leaving from Hopkins International Airport. Nearly 3,300 domestic and foreign flights have been canceled for Monday morning, according to FlightAware. That includes 20 flights leaving Hopkins, the earliest being a 6 a.m. United Airlines flight to Newark. Seventeen flights scheduled to arrive at Hopkins have been canceled as well. Most of the affected flights involve LaGuardia in New York, Newark Liberty International and Boston Logan International. As of 3 a.m., Newark Liberty had canceled 363 flights, or 73 percent of its schedule. John F. Kennedy in New York had canceled 151 (30 percent) and Boston Logan 148 (36 percent). More than 1,450 flights already have been canceled for Tuesday, reports NBC News. Bloomberg News reports the preliminary flight cancellations help carriers by allowing them to move planes, passengers and crews out of harm’s way. It also allows them to relocate aircraft to unaffected airports so airlines resume service faster once conditions improve.
