Airport operations resume Flights in and out of London Luton Airport are operating as normal following yesterday’s evacuation due to a security alert. London Luton Airport can confirm yesterday’s emergency evacuation followed a full security escalation after airport security, the police and the specialist military Explosive Ordnance Detection unit were unable to identify a suspicious object contained within a passenger’s hand luggage during a routine x-ray security search. Under questioning by the police the passenger was unable to account for the item and confirmed the bag had previously been left unattended. The item, which was rectangular in shape displayed a large amount of organic mass, power sources and several electronic cables, was effectively neutralised and taken away by Bedfordshire Police for further examination. London Luton Airport would like to thank passengers for their patience and cooperation and remind the travelling public to remain vigilant and aware in this time of heighted security. Insp Dave Ford, of the Airport Policing Unit, said that despite the inconvenience, all passengers remained calm and understanding of the situation. “The situation came about because of the combination of suspicious items in the hand luggage, an inadequate explanation and the fact that the passenger who owned the bag also told officers he had left it unattended while he went elsewhere in the terminal. “I’m pleased to say security procedures worked as they should have done. Passengers were very cooperative and the large number of people in the airport at the time were evacuated smoothly. In fact, some approached officers to say they were grateful for the way it had been dealt with.”
