Airpower Discussion Of The Week - Answer: Is There Any Reason For Which a Christian Should Agree To An Arranged Marriage? Sometimes we can get so caught up with the means that we forget the end. The end is the objective or what we want to achieve and the means is what we do to achieve that end. In marriage, the objective is to marry according to the will of God as revealed in the scripture and by his Spirit. The means to achieve this may vary. Our focus therefore must be to fulfill the will of God without being fixated on a particular method. God can use various ways to achieve an end. I will like us to examine different people in scripture who married according to the will of God but used different means. 1. The marriage of Isaac was an arranged marriage. Abraham sent his servant to get a wife for his son Isaac. This is part of the prayer Abrahams servant prayed. And he said, O Lord God of my master Abraham, I pray thee, send me good speed this day, and shew kindness unto my master Abraham...And let it come to pass, that the damsel to whom I shall say, Let down thy pitcher, I pray thee, that I may drink; and she shall say, Drink, and I will give thy camels drink also:let the same be she that thou hast appointed for thy servant Isaac; and thereby shall I know that thou hast shewed kindness unto my master. Genesis 24:12-14 2. The marriage of Joseph was not his preferred choice. He was under the instruction of the Holy Ghost. Now the birth of Jesus Christ was on this wise:When as his mother Mary was espoused to Joseph, before they came together, she was found with child of the Holy Ghost. Then Joseph her husband, being a just man, and not willing to make her a public example, was minded to put her away privily. But while he thought on these things, behold, the angel of the Lord appeared unto him in a dream, saying, Joseph, thou son of David, fear not to take unto thee Mary thy wife:for that which is conceived in her is of the Holy Ghost...Then Joseph being raised from sleep did as the angel of the Lord had bidden him, and took unto him his wife: Matthew 1:18-20, 24 3. The marriage of David to Abigail was his personal choice but consistent with the will of God. So David went up thither, and his two wives also, Ahinoam the Jezreelitess, and Abigail Nabals wife the Carmelite. 2 Samuel 2: Abigail was a widowed woman. There is no indication in scripture that God disapproved it. The lesson here is this: the most important thing in choosing a marriage partner is neither the means nor person but that the decision should be consistent with the Word and the will of God. Blessings!
