The commissioning was performed by the State Commissioner for Education, Prof. Offiong Offiong who described the initiative as a bold step taken by Airtel Nigeria to identify a community in a local village that needed intervention. Offiong said the State Government’s policy thrust geared towards charting a new course for the development of education in Cross River State has been further strengthened by the communication giant. He commended the management of Airtel for maintaining the “Cross River State Standard” in executing the project, just as he reiterated government’s resolve to ensure the delivery of qualitative education to every child of school age in the State. He said the project was a manifestation of the State government’s yearning that educational development should not be left in the hands of government alone but should involve the private sector which is the direct beneficiary of the products of qualitative education. The commissioner disclosed that, so far, the State Government had undertaken a comprehensive renovation of 300 primary schools and sued for further collaboration not only with Airtel Nigeria, but also with other corporate entities in the State in order to complement Government’s effort aimed at overhauling the remaining public schools spread across the State. Speaking during the event, Airtel’s Chief Executive Officer and Managing Director, Segun Ogunsanya, who was represented by the company’s Regional Operations Director, South Region, Godfrey Efeurhobo, said the telecoms operator is committed to its strategic partnerships with governments and organizations to uplift the standard of primary education in the country. “We are delighted to partner with the government and people of Cross River State in their quest to chart a new course for the development of education in Cross River State. “Without a doubt, quality education offers children the best opportunity in life to realize their dreams and become the leaders of tomorrow. A great environment is also critical to the development of a sound mind. It is, therefore, in recognition of the importance of education and as part our Corporate Social Responsibility initiative that we have committed to the adoption of public primary schools across Nigeria,” he said. He said that Airtel was spurred to embark on the program in view of the un-complementary remark made about the state of education in Nigeria by an international body. According to him, “in the light of the recent unflattering United Nations report on enrollment figures for Nigerian children, we must all unite to preserve the future of our great country by educating our future leaders”. Highlights of the occasion included the award of eight years scholarship by Mr. Godfrey Efeurhobo, to little Bunmi Solomon, a primary four pupil of the school, who distinguished herself while presenting the school head teacher’s address.
