Aishe Memetova: On 18 May 1944, when men were fighting against fascists as part of Soviet army, Mr. Stalin issued special decree according to which ALL representatives of Crimean Tatar, the whole nation, indigenous people of Crimea, mostly old people, women and kids, were forcefully and brutally deported from Crimea to Central Asia and Siberia. They were not permitted to take their belongings, everything happened at night, when noone expected anything like this. Soviet government claimed that all Crimean Tatars had cooperated with fascists, which was of course not true. My grandmother Sefiqa with three of her sons Repih, Mambet and Ziya, was deported to Uzbekistan. Two elder sons, Repih and Mambet, died during the first year in Uzbekistan, because living conditions were unbearable. My grandfather Osman, who was in army that time, found his family only in 1946. My mother and my aunt were born in Uzbekistan, as well as my father. We were prohibited to go back to Crimea, our homeland. In 60s national movement has started, the aim of which was repatriation and restoration of our rights. Only in late 80s the first Crimean Tatar families were able to mova back to Crimea. They were prohibited to settle in cities and wealthy neighbourhoods. My family returned only in 2000, my grandparents had already died and they never saw Crimea again, the land where they were born. Each member of my family experienced a lot of hardships on our way back. Now Crimea, my beloved homeland, is occupied by Russia, and new government prohibited Crimean Tatars to commemorate the biggest tragedy of our nation, the genocide against us on our land. It is the same as if they prohibited jews to commemorate Holocost. We must remember our past, we must spread the word about crime against us, we must hope for the better and fight for our right to live and develop on our land.
