Akan Goldweight Currency Africa is the birthplace of humanity and civilization. And the Akan people in the region of west Africa (actually Cote d’Ivoire and Ghana) have shown the development of gold industry back to more than 1500 years. In this picture here, we have the more than 1500 years or so the Akan were producing these brass weights to weigh gold dust which was their currency, thus the name ‘goldweights’. The idea and the implementation of GOLD-BASED CURRENCY came from the akan people of Côte d’Ivoire and Ghana The Swastika was an Akan symbol of currency, expressing power, money, wealth and integrity. Yes, economics, currency establishment was well in practice in west Africa not only with the Akan people but many others ethnic groups. The abundance of gold in the soil of Africa has allowed Akan people to manufacture golden items. This gold weight was used as an instrument/medium of currency exchange between the goods coming from all the corners of the Akan kingdoms as well as others kingdoms throughout Africa. The currency back-gold DID NOT start in the West, but well in West Africa. This Akan gold weight showed that the full technology of finance and economics associated with the measuring of gold dust as a medium of currency was developed in the Ashanti and others regions of west Africa. It was the currency exchange with the development of bank not only at individual level but also with the “officials” working for the Kings. The gold has been strongly involved in the lifestyle of African people.
