Akbar And Birbal Once Emperor Akbar heard that Birbal has started drinking. So he summoned him and said Birbal, I am informed that you have started drinking . Birbal protested and said Your Majesty, this is a false rumour spread by people who are jealous of me. The Emperor then allowed him to go. However, a few days later Akbar again heard that Birbal is drinking. So he decided to personally investigate the matter. One evening after nightfall Akbar put on a disguise and secretly slipped into Birbals house, and sat down in a dark corner. After some time Birbal returned home, having worked hard the whole day. On entering the house he shouted to his servant Jaam-e-sehat lao i.e. Bring the peg of health The servant brought one peg of wine, which Birbal drank. He then shouted to the servant Jaam-e-mauj lao , and the servant brought a second peg, which also Birbal drank. Thereafter the servant, on his own, brought a third peg. When he brought it, Birbal started beating him, saying You rascal, you want me to drink On hearing this the Emperor came out of his hiding place and said to Birbal Birbal, what fraud are you committing ? Just now you drank two pegs of wine, and now you are beating up this poor man for offering you drink Birbal replied Your Majesty, the first two pegs are not drink at all. The first peg, jaam-e-sehat is for maintaining my health, while the second peg, jaam-e-mauj, is for giving me pleasure. It is only the third peg which is wine, and which should not be taken . The moral of this story is that even if one wants to drink, he should drink in moderation. At most two pegs should be taken, the third is harmful
