Akpeki Highlights Landmark Achievements In Housing Sector BY DOMINIC OKONTA Commissioner for Housing, Delta State, Chief Paulinus Akpeki said that the state Governor, Dr. Emmanuel Uduaghan has been wholly instrumental to the landmark achievements recorded in Housing sector in the state. He named part of the achievements to include ‘’the erection of the tallest building in the Abuja (Delta Towers), the best High Court edifice in the nation (in Warri), the construction of classic academic classrooms and other projects across the state, which according to him has earned him the crown of a great achiever’’. Chief Akpeki who dropped the hint yesterday in Asaba at the on-going Mid-Term Reports press briefing, said that the state government has almost completed all on-going and abandoned projects it inherited across the state. “The completion of the N2.6 billion multi-purpose edifice, Delta Towers, Abuja (a six-storey building), he said , was not mainly a status symbol for the state, but would generate funds for the government in line with state’s Delta Beyond Oil programme,” He pointed out that Dr. Uduaghan earned the credit for executing the new Governor’s Lodge, Lagos, phase 1 of Sepele Market, construction of new Secretariat complex Annex, maintenance of Government Buildings: rehabilitation of Commissioners’ quarters, Asaba, renovation of House of Assembly Offices, and quarters, renovation of Government House, Asaba and the completion of Delta Development Property Authority (DDPA) complex, Asaba. Others on-going projects according to him, are the State House of Assembly Administrative/Library complex, Asaba, Religious hostel, Government Office, Office complex of Ministries of Finance and Economic Planning, Asaba, Laboratory/Classrooms at the Staff Training Centre, Asaba, High Court complex Warri and Office of Head of Service, Asaba among others. The housing initiative of the state government, he noted also experienced remarkable improvement, adding that the construction of 150 units of low/medium cost houses for civil servants in Asaba, the utilization of a N1.5 billion term facility by Federal Mortgage Bank of Nigeria for Delta State Government to build affordable houses for civil/public servants at Ugbolu and the Public-Private Partnership Housing Initiative (PPP), will address the housing needs of the members of the public when completed. “Maintenance of Government premises such as the Commissioners’ quarters, Permanent Secretaries quarters, Ministry of Housing Headquarters Annex, Old Secretariat, Fine Homes Estate, Junior/Medium Staff quarters, Asaba, Former Legislators’ Quarters, Off DLA Road, Asaba and Okwe Housing Estate, including consultancy service to other ministries and agencies and were also performed by the Housing ministry, ”he said The ministry, he said, is also supervising the construction of Board of Internal Revenue Headquarters Complex, Warri, the upgrade of 12 selected schools in the state, Senate building at DELSU, Abraka, Judiciary projects, various Health projects, construction of Multi-Purpose Youth Development Centre, Egbokodo, male hostel at DELSU, Asaba Campus, construction of mini Sports Arena, Ibusa and workshop/Lecture block at the School of Marine Technology, Burutu. Information Commissioner, Chike Ogeah Esq. asserted that no economy could excel without a well developed housing sector, adding that the state government housing policy would enhance the success of ‘Delta Beyond Oil’ programme. He r added that the state really experienced harvest of development in its Housing sector, a situation he said, that would boost the socio-economic fortune of the state and attract investors into the state.
