Aksharas interest in creating these kits started three years ago at a government school in Hoskote that the organization was involved with through its library programme. We realized that conceptual clarity was not getting through to the children, says Banerjee. The main criteria for the kits was that they had to be low-cost, durable, attractive and something that would convey the concept clearly. From a design point of view, the aids had to be tactile and manipulative - something the students would want to hold and touch and do things with. The other thing to keep in mind was that the aids would lend itself to being used in various ways; that they could be used to demonstrate different concepts and ideas.
