Al-Makura lauds peaceful conduct of Nasarawa local government elections Premium Times - 1 hour agoNATIONAL, NEWS The elections started late in most polling units. Governor Umaru Al-Makura of Nasarawa State has commended the people of the state for the peaceful conduct of Saturday’s local government election in the state. Mr. Al-Makura spoke on Saturday, after casting his vote at the Lungun Wambai polling unit of Gayan Ward in Lafia, at about 3.30 p.m. He said that reports reaching him indicated that the election was generally peaceful across the state. The governor urged the people to sustain the peace even after the polls, adding that all grievances that might arise from the polls should be channeled through the appropriate quarters. “I know that exercises like this are bound to have certain challenges; however, I urge the people to be law-abiding and respect the rule of law in airing their grievances,” he said. On the delay in the arrival of materials to polling units, Mr. Al- Makura said that although such hiccups could not be ruled out, it did not mar the election. “At the end of the day, the election will be adjudged credible, free and fair, and reflecting the wishes of the people,” he said. Voting started late in most polling units in Lafia, with accreditation and voting going on simultaneously Meanwhile there was large turn-out of voters in Keffi Local Government Area, while accreditation started at 10 a.m. A presiding officer at Baptist Primary School polling unit of Goriya Ward Keffi, Malam Gana said that the accreditation was peaceful. “You can see by yourself that the accreditation is peaceful, look at how people lined up without any form of rancour, and we will stop the election once it is 4 p.m.,” the official said.
