Alabama Rot - what you need to know. You may have heard of this in the press over the last week or so. A number of dogs have been reported to have died of a mystery illness. The have shown signs of non-healing skin wounds or lesions on their face or legs. Other signs include a loss of appetite, vomiting and depression - although these signs are seen with a large number of other diseases too. It has been reported that some dogs have gone onto kidney failure and have died. We havent seen any cases at any of our practices in Bristol. It has been reported in a number of counties including Worcs, Dorset and Cornwall - so be vigilant. At the moment nobody knows what is causing the disease although there are some similarities to a disease call Alabama Rot which is thought to be caused by an E Coli toxin - but to date this has not been shown in cases in the UK. If anyone knows of any cases in or around Bristol - please let us know. Mark
