Alana Goldsmiths family would like to share this statement with you all. Alana was a fun-loving, vivacious & intelligent young woman until anorexia nervosa starved her brain & destroyed her hopes and dreams. The Anorexia started when she was 15 although for many years she hid it from her family and friends. Alana was almost 24 when the illness took her from us by suicide. For the last three years our hearts have been heavy without Alana enriching our lives. We have been on a traumatic roller coaster of desperate grief, emptiness and seething anger. This silent killer is a highly complex mental illness. The Inquest has shone a light on the countless issues impacting Eating Disorder sufferers, carers & practitioners. We hope that the Findings bring about meaningful discussions amongst our Health policy makers & lead to decisions that result in more resources & better care for this epidemic facing Australia. Butterflys National ED HOPE Support Line is available until 9pm tonight if you would like to speak to a counsellor. The ED HOPE Line is not a crisis line, if you need to speak to someone urgently please call Lifeline on 13 11 14 or Kids Helpline is also available for people up to 26 years of age on 1800 55 1800.
