Alaska State Trooper Mealey stopped to take in a sunrise atop the Eagle Summit about 100 miles northeast of Fairbanks on the Steese Highway on Oct. 29. At an elevation of 3,624 feet, the summit is prone to high winds and temperatures that can plummet to the -40 range. Mealey enjoyed the silence of a chilly visit to the summit by capturing the reflection of his patrol truck in his goggles. Mealey and Alaska Wildlife Trooper Potter, who both work out of the post in Fairbanks, have a bit of a photo battle going on. Potter has an advantage with the spectacular scenery he flies over while patrolling the wildlands of Alaska in his patrol aircraft. Because of this, Mealey gets a little creative with his photos while patrolling the far-flung road system and remote villages north of Fairbanks as a member of the Roving Rural Unit. In the process, Mealey has mastered the art of taking a selfie.
