Alberta update: (Debbie Kirkby) Alberta Fireball Update Our first event of the year, June 20, 21, was the Chestermere Lake "Icebreaker Regatta at the Calgary Yacht Club. It fell on the weekend of the flooding and as a result we had only 3 boats attend and were forced to sail in X class. Wind was mostly light and shifty over the two days culminating with a win for Debbie Kirkby and Gregg Ferguson, second to Frank Crawford and Sean Holmes-Smith and third to Matt Law sailing with new fireball sailor Liz Brennan. "Founders Regatta", formerly the Wabamun Open. All 5 helmsmen and 2 crew competed here back in 1974, making it almost 40 years later! Roy Tichkowsky sailing with longtime crew Kate Russell, brother Ken with young newcomer Ethan Brown, John Henderson and newcomer crew Alex Pocock, Hamish and Frances Ferguson and Debbie Kirkby and Gregg Ferguson. Though the food is always plentiful at Wabamun, they managed to outdo themselves this year. Breakfast had hot and cold cereal, bagels, toast, jam and peanut butter, fruit, juice, coffee and tea. Lunch served up good Ukrainian cheddar filled perogies with bacon and onions, hearty soup and rolls, salad, fruit and cookies; and dinner was barbecued New York strip loin steaks with baked potatoes, gourmet brown beans, two kinds of salad, garlic bread, and two choices of pie a la mode. It was a good thing we had enough wind to help burn up some of those calories. Kirkby/Ferguson won the regatta with all firsts, second went to John Henderson and Ethan Brown and third to Roy Tichkowsky and Kate Russell.
