Alchemically: To the alchemist, there was no area of life where the planets were not involved. The Greeks had a personified view of the planets – as each was a being in their own right, and played a part in every level relating to man and nature. Traditionally, the alchemy planet symbols were depicted as seven in number. This is significant as this number corresponds to the seven major organs of the human body, the seven energy centers of (wo) man (think chakras), and most interestingly, the seven major metals in alchemy. A little history lesson: The roots of alchemy can be traced back to Egypt. The word alchemy may be derived from the Arabic al kimiya meaning the magical craft of the Black Country. Ancient Egyptians were master metalworkers and believed that magic powers were contained in all matter. This is significant as we discover the double meanings behind elemental symbols. When Egypt was conquered by the Arabs, they took the science back with them to Spain. From there, the science of alchemy along with the knowledge of alchemy signs spread to England, France and Germany. Alchemy can be credited for being the foundation of modern-day chemistry. But more than science, alchemy represents the spiritual progress of humanity Below are the seven planet symbols and a brief explanation of their characteristics in the alchemy tradition. Interesting reading.
