Alert: #CitizensUnited and the "160 Summer" "In the last several months Senators Bernie Sanders (I-VT), Tom Udall (D-CO), Jon Tester (D-MT) and others have introduced resolutions that would amend the U.S. Constitution to address the urgent problems of unrestrained corporate and special interest influence in our democracy, inflicted upon us by Supreme Court decisions like the one in Citizens United v. FEC. There are now more than a dozen such resolutions that have been introduced in this Congress, and it’s vital that these measures accumulate as many cosponsors as possible. As we build strength behind our movement to rein in corporate power and restore Government by the People, we need to get more and more members of Congress on record endorsing the amendment strategy. That’s why this summer we’re setting a goal of getting 160 members of Congress to endorse the amendment strategy. We’re calling it the “160 Summer,” and we need your help! Please call YOUR U.S. Senators and Representative now and urge them to cosponsor one or more of the pro-democracy constitutional amendment resolutions that would eliminate undue corporate and special interest influence on our elections. You can find the phone numbers for your members of Congress as well as whether or not they already support the amendment strategy here: united4thepeople.org/113/ If they are already with us, please call them and thank them for being a leader in this effort. Find a list of the amendment resolutions that have been introduced in the current Congress here: united4thepeople.org/amendments.html Over three years ago, in the landmark ruling Citizens United v. FEC, a 5-4 majority of the Supreme Court granted corporations the constitutional right to spend without limit to influence our elections. The decision reversed over a century of law, and represented an unprecedented attack on the core democratic values of the Constitution. Since then, we’ve made great strides in our efforts to overturn this and other harmful decisions by amending the Constitution to enact free and fair elections and rein in corporate power in our democracy. To date: 16 states have formally called on Congress to pass a “Citizens United” amendment resolution for state ratification; Nearly 500 municipalities have passed resolutions or approved ballot measures; And over 100 Senators and Representatives have pledged their support in the 113th Congress. Please help us keep up the momentum. Call your Representative and Senators today and strongly urge them to co-sponsor an amendment resolution in their chamber and support the use of constitutional remedies to overturn Citizens United and related cases! united4thepeople.org/113/ The stage is now set. Amendment leaders in the Senate and the House have introduced a variety of amendment resolutions that would overturn Citizens United and related cases. Your Representative and Senators should pledge their support for this effort. We have a long summer ahead of us so let’s make it one to remember! Thanks for all that you do, Calvin Sloan, Legislative Representative P.S. Please help us make sure our intel is up to date! If you get information from a congressional office that a Senator or Representative supports the amendment strategy but we have them marked as not yet supporting, please let us know as soon as you can by emailing us at [email protected] so we can follow up. Thanks!"
