Alert : TWO ENCOUNTERS, TWO GRENADE ATTACKS IN KASHMIR LEAVE 17 DEAD, MANY INJURED. Three days ahead of the Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s scheduled election rally in Srinagar, Kashmir valley witnessed four militancy related incidents including two encounters and two grenade attacks. The security blanket has been intensified across the region and high alert has been sounded. The first incident, a major encounter, started in the wee hours on Friday in North Kashmir’s Uri sector, near the Line of Control. Seven Army soldiers, three policemen and atleast six militants were killed in the ongoing encounter by this afternoon. A senior Army officer said that the gunmen attacked the 32-field regiment camp at around 3 am. In another encounter in Soura locality of capital city Srinagar, an unidentified militant was killed while another was reportedly holed up. Reports said that troops were rushed near Ahmad Nagararea here following inputs of presence of militants. An exchange of fire followed and a militant was shot dead, but the second one is still holed up in the neighbourhood, sources said. Suspected militants hurled a grenade at a police station in South Kashmir’s Shopian district this afternoon. No causality was reported from the spot. In another similar incident, suspected militants hurled a grenade at government forces in Tral town of South Kashmir’s Pulwama district. Initial reports claimed that seven people including civilians were injured, three of them critically. The Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir this morning said that the militant attack on Army ‘desperately’ showed the levels militants would go to disturb peace and normalcy.
