Aleutian volcanoes waking up JUNE 23, 2014 - Five volcanoes now simultaneously active, the most activity in 26 years. June 23, 2014 – Seismic activity and volcanic eruptions in the Aleutian Islands and the far western Brooks Range have increased sharply over the past few months, says The Alaska Volcano Observatory (AVO). Right now, five volcanoes in the Aleutian Islands are on alert. It’s the most activity they’ve seen at once in their 26-year history, says John Power of the AVO. Volcanoes seem to be waking up all across the chain. Shishaldin, Cleveland and Veniaminoff in the eastern and central Aleutians have been on alert for months now. In the western Aleutians, the AVO put Semisopochnoi on watch just last week. Semisopochnoi has erupted only twice in recorded history, first in 1873 and then in 1987, says Matt Haney, a research geophysicist at the AVO. The AVO website has placed three volcanoes on yellow alert level (signs of elevated unrest above known background levels), and three at orange – the second-highest alert level after red. mining/volcanoes-are-waking-up-in-the-aleutians-73096/ iceagenow.info/2014/06/aleutian-volcanoes-waking/
